Actually, if you've read Contact Harvest, the war between the humans and the Covies begins when a damaged ship full of Brutes (I forget how to spell their species name) finds what they think is an oracle on the planet Harvest. They land on Harvest (after some minor fights between the Kig Yar (jackels) and the humans) and begin looking for what they thought was an oracle. A gunshot is heard in the background (as it turns out some trigger happy grunts fired on the humans without warning or authorization from the brutes) and all hell breaks loose. All of the "sacred objects" that the brutes thought they were detecting were really the humans on the planet, which created their sacred objects.
